Exercise Physiology

Upon completion of this chapter, you will understand the basic concepts of exercise physiology, as well as the individual systems that comprise the science. You will also be able to describe how the principles of exercise physiology and the kinetic chain are the foundation for exercise programming and implementation.

What is exercise physiology?

Exercise physiology is the study of the cellular reactions within the body during and after exercise. Genetics aside, people’s bodies adapt differently to the stimulus (exercise) placed on it. The body builder has a greater lean body mass than the swimmer or the yoga instructor. The swimmer likely has a greater VO2 Max than the bodybuilder and the yoga instructor is probably more flexible. Each individual has undergone adaptive changes based on their exercise programs. This is exercise physiology. In other words, we can look at exercise physiology as human physiological responses and adaptations to physical exercise.
