Ulysses S. Grant
(April 27, 1822 - July 23, 1885)

Ulysses S. Grant (actually Hiram Ulysses Grant) was appointed General-in-Chief of the Union Army (in the American Civil War) by Abraham Lincoln in 1864. He presided over the Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Grant was elected as the 18th president of the United States in 1868.
