The
Trickett Surname
I
think it is most likely that the Trickett surname is derived
from the French name Triquet, which means small bat or club.
My father, Edison, told me that he was told as a boy that
Triquet was the original spelling.
The
name probably arrived in England in the Eleventh century,
shortly after the Conquest of 1066; William the Conqueror
encouraged his Norman supporters to settle in England and
often gave them large estates and important titles as
an incentive. The surname is first documented in England
in 1130 when Ralph Trichet appears in the Pipe
Rolls (the earliest surviving official government archives
for the Middle Ages) of Middlesex, while in the Turia Reggis
Rolls of Berkshire in 1198 is recorded the name of Robert
Tricket. In the Hundred Rolls of 1273 there are references
to Baldewin Triket of Bedfordshire and Thomas Triket of
Norfolk, while in the Liber Feadorum, during the reign
of Edward I (1272-1307), there is listed an Ida Triket
of Middlesex and a Simon Triket of Essex.
According
to another source, the surname is the anglicized version
of the Norman surname Trichet. This name has its roots in
the Old French "Tricher" which
means "to deceive" or "mislead." The
original bearer would have been one who was known for his
sly behaviour or cheating nature. Other forms of the surname
in France include Trichard, Tricard, Tricart and Trichot.
Trickett
may also be a variant of the surname Triggett, which means
the "son
of Trigg," a diminutive form of the Old Norse forename
Tryggy, meaning "faithful" or "trusty." Other
forms of this derivation include Triggs, Trig and Trigot.
The Trigot surname is first recorded in 1379; Emma Trigot
and Sibilla Trigot are listed in the Poll Tax Returns of
Yorkshire of that year.
I've
also read that Tricker is a variation of the English nickname
Trick, which was given to the crafty or cunning person,
from the Middle English word trick = strategem, device.
Trickett is supposedly a diminutive form.
According
to Ancestral Products (a business which sells "Family
Histories"), "The very first record of the family
name Trickett was found in Brittany, which is located in
France. The Trickett family traces their ancestral roots
back to French origin before the year 1100. From here they
branched and migrated, gaining prosperity as a notable family
of France and later other countries." Strangely enough
(note the heavy sarcasm here), they also say that "The
very first record of the family name Trickett was found in
Moray, which is located in Scotland. The Trickett family
traces their ancestral roots back to Norman origin
before the year 1100. From here they branched and migrated,
gaining prosperity as a notable family of Scotland and later
other countries." Hmmm.
