Coleman, the son of James and Ann Maria Ferrell, was born on October 29, 1837. He married Sarah Steele on March 29, 1860, in Monongalia County, Virginia. Among the couple's 16 children was my great grandfather, Edson Trickett.

Coleman was born on his father's farm near Halleck, Monongalia County, Virginia. He spent his youth in pursuit of an education while tending to his farm duties. After reaching the age of majority, he became a stone mason.

The Rev. Eli F. Westfall officiated at the Trickett-Steele wedding which took place near Brown's Chapel, Virginia.

Coleman served in Company B, 4th West Virginia Cavalry, as a teamster, during the Civil War and was a pensioner during the remainder of his life.
